Visitations: on several occasions Greythorn has had official visits from Councillors of the RVBA, the most recent being by Cr. Jack Pearce, Vice President at the 1983-84 President’s Day. In return three of our members Rod Allsop, John Grose and Keith Kohlman have been members of RVBA parties to country association.

Mutual Visits: For several years Greythorn and Webbcona, Ballarat, clubs have exchanged visits, being respective hosts in alternate years. Arranged by Ron Dunn, Greythorn now makes an annual visit to point Lonsdale Club to which two of our former members, Marj & Eric Cook belong.
These pleasant inter-changes have resulted in many friendships to which members look forward to renewing each year.

Presidents: Greythorn has been blessed with a succession of excellent presidents who have all made contributions in their various ways. We do not intend to differentiate between them, ladies or men; however Jim Rumpf and Tom Kennedy deserve special mention for their initiatives during the early days, especially for their influence in establishing the new clubhouse.

Secretaries: Secretaries too have been vital members of the executive. Mention must be made of Bert Newsome who served for eleven years and Arthur Kennedy who held the job for seven years. Mrs. Isobel Robinson was Ladies secretary for seven years (one as Mrs. I Cahn).

Treasurers: The Club’s satisfactory financial position is largely due to the wisdom and work of a number of treasurers. Bill Ellis is in his sixth year at this important job. The Ladies too have bee served by good treasurers.

Newsletters: Communication within the Club has been helped greatly by two sets of newsletters, the first being produced by Isobel Cahn from July 1964 to July 1966 and the current edition of which there has been 47 issues since the first in July 1979. Colin Webb has been the editor by Reg Hinkley has done a power of work with every issue. Marj Rogers was our initial typist and Doug Duff and Don Bradley have helped with reading proofs and collating for distribution.

Liquor Licence: It is interesting that the Club’s Constitution of August 25, 1965 had the clause (iii) under Objects 3, “To apply to the Liquor Control Commission to be registered as a Club and to hold, maintain and renew any registration granted to any such application and to do all such things and Acts as may be necessary or desirable in connection with such application, holding, maintenance and renewal, and to provide refreshments and liquor in accordance with such Acts”.
The matter was brought before the Club during the early 1970’s but after consideration; the General Committee decided not to go on with such application. The matter was raised again during 1982 and after intensive preliminary work by a sub-committee, an overwhelming majority at a record special meeting on November 4, 1982, decided to proceed with the application. As expected, this proved to be a long and tedious task involving revision of the Constitution, seeking of approval by the City of Doncaster & Templestowe, surviving opposition by several local residents, and finally visits to the Liquor Control Commission which granted the licence on August 8, 1984. The committee had wisely decided to proceed with the necessary bar extensions which, finished before the licence was granted, are a wonderful asset to the Club. Thanks to wonderful voluntary work by a number of members, these additions including fittings were completed a cost of less that $50 000, an estimated saving of at least $30 000 if the job had been done commercially. Members took out debentures towards this cost worth $36 000. In view of the number of helpers in various capacities, it is difficult to give credit to individuals but outstanding service was given by Harry Doyle, Bill Dowling, Eric Bunston, Frank Hutton, Keith Kohlman, Ted Bensley, Clint Sandiford, Bob Devers, Adrian Doekes, Don Bradley and Keith Low. The only outside labour needed was for part of the plumbing, bricklaying, ready-mix concrete and steel frame work. The overall management of this development was in the hands of the Bar Committee which deserves great credit for the eventual result. Bob Devers has been appointed the Club’s first Bar Manager and Greythorn looks forward to great advantages from this asset both socially and financially.
