Life Members: As
Greythorn places great stress on the qualities required for eligibility
for life membership, it is natural that only six people have achieved
this honour during the Club’s first quarter century. They are
W.W. Semple, J. Gravell, W.E Dowling, Mrs. E. McRostie, Mrs. I.
Robinson, and Mrs. E. Hayward. Mr. Dowling, Mrs. Hayward and Mrs.
Robinson are the only survivors of this select group.
Achievements: Despite great
endeavour, no Greythorn team has won the coveted Division championship
flag although a number have won sections and promotion. However, we
have recorded several outstanding achievements:
-
1974-75
RVBA Metropolitan Open Fours Championship, runners-up: K Coates (L), C
Cairncross (2), D Robinson (3), C Cornwell (S)
- 1979-80
RVBA Champion of Champions, runner-up: Bruce Ralston.
-
1980-81
Winners VLBA Metropolitan Pairs and Runners-up in State Pairs: Nita
Corby (L), Rosie McLean (S).
-
1983-84
Roamers – Premiers Eastern Suburbs Roamers Association.
Early Improvements: The Club
progressed so fast in its early years that there was soon need for a
second green and a much more commodious and comfortable clubhouse even
though the pioneer structures had served their purpose well.
Accordingly in the early 1960’s a second green known as the W.W.
Semple green was levelled together with an equivalent are, now the Park
Avenue Car Park and finance was arranged to build what is now one of
the finest clubhouses in the Metropolitan area. The plaque records:
“This clubhouse was opened by the Mayor of the City of Doncaster
& Templestowe, Cr. Stan Shepherd on 27/05/1967. President T.M.
Kennedy, Secretary W.W. Semple”, and as we have mentioned Jim
Rumpf and Tom Kennedy had a lot to do with the planning and
organisation of this project. It was designed and constructed by F.J.
Horner & Son in conjunction with the Building Committee: J. W.
Rumpf (Chairman), C Chandler, H Hindley and W. De Clifford.
Super-Veterans: As the years
have passed, Greythorn has had quite a number of worthy super-veterans.
Naturally they come and pass on, but the present list includes Ted
Collings, Cleaver Gathergood, Matt McDonell, Bill Orr, Bill Riddell and
Alec Weir. A former Greythorn stalwart, Elliott Wells who now lives in
Balwyn, has joined us for triples matches during the past few years.
Thanks: Special thanks are due
to such people as Glad Jones, Arthur & Rose Kennedy, Bill Ellis,
Mick Finnigan and Reg Hinkley for their help in preparing this brief
history of the Greythorn Bowling Club and to Harold Jewell for
arranging the printing. I apologise if anybody has inadvertently been
left out.
